We exist to transform the relationship between nature and the economy.

We are an international organization working to ensure that the value of nature is fairly recognized, measured and integrated into economic decision-making.

Who We Are

An initiative created to defend fairness and environmental integrity.

At the Environmental Markets Fairness Foundation, we work to integrate nature into economic decision-making through science, technology, high-integrity methodologies and international collaboration.

We develop the knowledge, tools and partnerships needed to better understand natural systems, strengthen environmental markets and accelerate the transition to an economy that recognizes the value of natural capital.

Today, our purpose is to help build the scientific and institutional foundations for a new relationship between nature, markets and society.

Our Approach

Beyond carbon.

Carbon is an important piece, but on its own it does not capture the complexity of nature.

Biodiversity, water, forests, soils, climate resilience, ecosystem services and the health of territories are all part of a single interconnected system.

That is why, at EMFF, we work across environmental markets as a whole and on the methodologies, institutions and capacities needed to integrate nature into economic decision-making.

Although our first steps were linked to carbon markets, our vision evolved toward a broader approach focused on understanding, measuring and integrating natural systems as a whole. That evolution continues to define our work today.

Why We Exist

Because nature is still treated as an externality.

All human activity depends, directly or indirectly, on the services nature provides. Yet current economic models continue to treat many of these services as free resources. This invisibility has consequences:

  • Ecosystems are being degraded without their loss being reflected in economic decisions.
  • Nature-related risks are not adequately valued.
  • Conservation projects receive insufficient funding.
  • The communities that protect territories do not receive fair compensation.
  • Markets lose credibility when they cannot demonstrate their results.

Our Horizon

A future in which nature is no longer invisible in economic decisions.

Our strategic direction is clear: to help build an economic system capable of recognizing humanity's dependence on natural systems.

This means improving our ability to understand nature, measure its condition, identify impacts, value outcomes and direct capital toward activities that contribute to its conservation and regeneration.

Mission and Vision

Our mission.

To advance the knowledge, methodologies, capacities and partnerships needed to integrate nature into economic decision-making and to strengthen environmental markets grounded in science, integrity, transparency and fairness.

Our vision.

We aspire to an economy that recognizes that long-term prosperity depends on healthy natural systems.

The next generation of environmental markets will not be defined by carbon or biodiversity alone: it will be defined by our ability to understand nature more deeply and to translate that knowledge into better decisions, strong institutions and long-term investment.

Values

Cuatro compromisos that guide every decision.

Integrity

We work to ensure that initiatives deliver positive, measurable and lasting environmental outcomes.

Integrity is not an added feature: it is the basic condition for nature-related markets to be credible. We also maintain the technical and institutional judgment needed to bring together actors with different interests.

Science

Decisions related to nature must be grounded in evidence, robust methodologies and a genuine understanding of ecological systems.

We explore new technologies, methodologies and financial instruments, always tied to safeguards and verifiable outcomes.

Collaboration

Environmental challenges are too complex for any single organization or discipline. We connect institutions and sectors with different capabilities to build solutions that none could achieve on their own.

Equity

We advocate for the benefits of environmental projects to be shared fairly, recognizing local communities, Indigenous peoples, producers, territorial governments and ecosystem stewards.

Those affected by a project must be able to take part in its design, development and evaluation.

Let's work together

Let's make nature visible in the decisions that shape our future.

We work with organizations that want to better understand their relationship with natural systems and contribute to the development of rigorous, fair and scalable environmental solutions.
